A healthier relationship with alcohol
Hypnotherapy for alcohol overuse
If alcohol is taking up more space in your life than you want it to, we can begin with an honest, judgement-free conversation about what you would like to change.

You might recognise this
Drinking more than you meant to, despite deciding otherwise.
Reaching for alcohol automatically when you want to relax or switch off.
Feeling tired of the private negotiations, promises and restarts.
Change can begin without shame.
A pattern around alcohol does not define your character. Habits can become tied to particular emotions, routines and expectations, and that can make them hard to change through determination alone.
Hypnotherapy may help you understand those associations and practise different responses, as part of a plan that is appropriate for your health and circumstances.

If you're tired of the private negotiations, promises and restarts around alcohol, support is available: tell me what's happening and we can explore whether hypnotherapy is an appropriate next step for you.
When drinking becomes automatic
You don't have to wait for a crisis to make a change.
Perhaps you don't consider yourself dependent on alcohol, but you know you are drinking more than you would like. One glass becomes several, alcohol-free evenings are increasingly rare, or drinking has become your automatic way to relax, switch off or cope with difficult feelings.
You may have promised yourself that you would cut down, only to find the same pattern returning. That doesn't mean you lack willpower. Alcohol can become deeply connected with particular times, places, emotions and expectations. Once those associations become automatic, conscious determination alone may not be enough to create lasting change.
Hypnotherapy may help you understand what alcohol has been doing for you, and develop healthier, more effective ways to meet those needs.
Working below the surface
How can hypnotherapy help you stop drinking?
Hypnosis is not a magic switch and it cannot force you to change. Instead, it allows us to work with the unconscious habits, beliefs and emotional associations that may be keeping the pattern in place.
Depending on what you want to achieve, our work may help you:
- Reduce or remove the desire to drink
- Break the association between alcohol and relaxation
- Feel more comfortable in social situations without drinking
- Respond differently to stress, boredom, loneliness or difficult emotions
- Strengthen your sense of choice and self-control
- Imagine and begin creating a life in which alcohol is no longer important
- Feel confident saying no without experiencing deprivation or resentment
The aim is not simply to help you resist alcohol. It is to help you reach the point where drinking less, or not drinking at all, feels natural, positive and genuinely right for you.
Your goal, your choice
Cut down or stop completely?
You don't need to have everything decided before we speak.
Some people want to stop drinking entirely. Others want to regain control and become more thoughtful about when and how much they drink. During our initial conversation, we can explore what has been happening, what you would like to change and whether moderation or abstinence feels like the most appropriate goal for you.
I won't judge you, label you or tell you what your relationship with alcohol “should” look like. My role is to listen carefully and help you move towards the change you want to make.
Calm, focused and collaborative
What happens during a session?
We begin by talking about your current drinking pattern and the situations in which you are most likely to drink. We also explore what alcohol gives you, or appears to give you, whether that is relaxation, confidence, escape, reward or simply the comfort of a familiar routine.
Together, we create a clear picture of how you would prefer to think, feel and respond instead. Hypnosis is then used to reinforce that new direction, helping your mind build different associations and more supportive automatic responses.
You remain aware and in control throughout the session. Hypnosis usually feels pleasantly calm and focused, similar to becoming absorbed in a book, film or train of thought.
A genuine desire for change
Is hypnotherapy right for me?
Hypnotherapy may be suitable if you:
- Regularly drink more than you intend
- Use alcohol to relax or cope with stress
- Are tired of negotiating with yourself about drinking
- Have tried to cut down but repeatedly return to the same habits
- Want to enjoy social occasions without relying on alcohol
- Are ready to make a genuine change
The most important starting point is not perfect confidence. It is an honest desire for something to be different.
Your safety comes first
An important note about alcohol dependence.
Hypnotherapy may provide complementary psychological support, but it isn't a substitute for medical assessment or medically supervised withdrawal.
If you drink heavily every day, need alcohol in the morning, or experience shaking, sweating, nausea, anxiety or other symptoms when you don't drink, please speak to a doctor or specialist alcohol service before reducing or stopping. If you are physically dependent on alcohol, stopping suddenly can cause dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Read the NHS guidance on alcohol-use disorder.
Hypnotherapy may still form part of your wider recovery plan, provided it is appropriate and coordinated with the medical or specialist support you need.
Your wellbeing comes first
Alcohol change should always be approached safely.
Hypnotherapy is a complementary approach. It does not replace medical or mental health assessment, diagnosis or treatment. Please continue any prescribed medication unless the professional who prescribed it advises you otherwise.
Read Your wellbeing matters for guidance about seeking professional or urgent support and using hypnotherapy alongside other care.
