Navigating change with calm and confidence

Hypnotherapy for menopause

Menopause can affect sleep, mood, comfort and confidence in very individual ways. Hypnotherapy may offer complementary support for some of those experiences.

You might recognise this

Sleep is disrupted and you are running on less energy.

Hot flushes or physical changes make daily life less predictable.

Changes in mood or confidence leave you feeling unlike yourself.

You are still yourself through change.

Menopause is a natural life stage, but that does not mean difficult symptoms should be dismissed or simply endured.

Hypnotherapy may help with relaxation, coping and some symptom experiences, while medical advice remains important for assessment and treatment choices.

More than hot flushes

Menopause is a whole-person transition, physical, emotional and psychological.

The physical symptoms of menopause, hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, fatigue, brain fog and changes to mood, are real and can significantly affect daily life. What is less often discussed is the equally real psychological and emotional dimension of this transition.

Menopause marks a significant shift in identity for many women. The hormonal changes bring with them a period of reassessment, of who you are, what you want, and what the next chapter looks like. For some this feels liberating; for others it brings grief, uncertainty or a sense of loss that is not always easy to name. Both are valid, and both deserve attention.

Hypnotherapy can work with the whole picture, helping to calm the nervous system's response to physical symptoms, ease the anxiety and mood changes that often accompany this stage, and create space for the emotional and psychological aspects of the transition to be properly attended to.

Mind, body and the space between

How can hypnotherapy help with menopause?

Many of the most disruptive symptoms of menopause have a significant mind-body component. Hot flushes, for example, are triggered by a change in the brain's temperature regulation, a process that the nervous system influences and that can be exacerbated by stress and anxiety. Sleep disturbance, mood changes and anxiety are similarly shaped by the interaction between hormonal change and the nervous system.

Hypnotherapy may offer a way to work with this mind-body relationship. In a deeply relaxed and focused state, we can help calm the nervous system's response to menopausal symptoms, address the anxiety and low mood that so often accompany this stage, and support a more settled, confident relationship with the transition.

Depending on what is happening for you, our work together may help you:

  • Reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flushes and the anxiety that surrounds them
  • Improve sleep that has been disrupted by night sweats or an overactive, anxious mind
  • Ease the mood changes, irritability and emotional sensitivity of perimenopause and menopause
  • Address the brain fog and difficulty concentrating that many women find particularly distressing
  • Manage the anxiety, sometimes new, sometimes worsened, that this hormonal stage can trigger
  • Process the emotional and identity dimensions of this life transition
  • Build a more settled, confident and compassionate relationship with your changing body

A wide range of effects, one approach

Symptoms and aspects of menopause hypnotherapy may help with.

Hot flushes and night sweats

Hot flushes or hot flashes are one of the most researched applications of clinical hypnosis for menopause. Hypnotherapy may help calm the nervous system's role in triggering and amplifying the flush response, and ease the anticipatory anxiety that can make them worse.

Sleep disturbance

Night sweats, an overactive mind and shifting hormones create a difficult combination for sleep. Hypnotherapy can address the anxiety and physical arousal that make it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night.

Anxiety and mood changes

Hormonal fluctuations in perimenopause and menopause can trigger or worsen anxiety, low mood and emotional reactivity. Hypnotherapy may help regulate the nervous system's response and provide greater emotional steadiness.

Brain fog and concentration

Difficulty concentrating, finding words and retaining information can be among the most unsettling symptoms of menopause. Hypnotherapy may help reduce the anxiety that compounds cognitive symptoms and support a calmer, clearer mental state.

Identity and the emotional transition

Menopause is a significant life marker, one that brings questions about identity, purpose and what comes next. Hypnotherapy may offer a reflective, compassionate space for that inner work alongside the management of physical symptoms.

Perimenopause anxiety

The years before periods stop can bring unpredictable hormonal fluctuations and significant anxiety, often before a woman knows perimenopause has begun. Hypnotherapy may help manage this unsettling period with greater steadiness.

Personal, calm and restorative

What happens during a session?

We begin by talking about what menopause is like for you, which symptoms are most disruptive, how they are affecting your daily life and sleep, and what the emotional and psychological landscape of this stage feels like. Menopause is not one experience; it is highly individual, and the work we do is tailored to yours.

Hypnosis is then used to guide you into a state of deep relaxation, one that is itself beneficial for a nervous system under the pressure of hormonal change. From there we work with the specific symptoms and experiences that are most significant: calming the flush response, easing anxiety, addressing sleep, or creating space for the emotional dimensions of the transition.

Many people find sessions during menopause deeply restorative at a time when rest and calm can feel elusive. You remain fully aware and in control throughout.

A genuine desire for support

Is hypnotherapy right for me?

Hypnotherapy for menopause may be suitable if you:

  • Are experiencing hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance or mood changes that are significantly affecting your quality of life
  • Find that anxiety, stress or emotional sensitivity have worsened during perimenopause or menopause
  • Are looking for a complementary approach alongside any existing medical care or HRT
  • Prefer to avoid or reduce medication, with the guidance and agreement of your GP
  • Are finding the emotional and identity aspects of this life transition difficult to navigate
  • Want a regular, restorative and personally tailored space during a demanding time

Hypnotherapy is a complementary support and should be used alongside, not instead of, appropriate medical care. If you have not yet spoken to your GP or gynaecologist about your menopause symptoms, please do. There are effective medical options including HRT, and your doctor is the right first step. Do not change or stop any prescribed medication without medical advice.

Your wellbeing comes first

Menopause symptoms deserve individual medical advice.

Hypnotherapy is a complementary approach. It does not replace medical or mental health assessment, diagnosis or treatment. Please continue any prescribed medication unless the professional who prescribed it advises you otherwise.
