Sudden, overwhelming and possible to change

Hypnotherapy for fear and phobias

A phobia can make a specific situation feel dangerous before conscious reasoning has a chance to respond. Hypnotherapy may help you approach that fear differently.

You might recognise this

Fear arrives automatically, even when part of you knows you are safe.

Avoidance has begun to shape plans, journeys or everyday choices.

You feel embarrassed by a reaction you did not choose.

Fear does not define you.

A phobic response is learned and automatic. It is not a measure of courage, intelligence or strength.

Hypnotherapy may help you practise calm, update old associations and approach change in manageable steps agreed with you.

If fear or avoidance is limiting choices you want to make, you don't have to feel embarrassed by a reaction you didn't choose: tell me what happens for you and we can explore whether hypnotherapy could help you respond differently.

Not just a fear

A phobia is not something you choose, and it isn't something you simply get over.

Most people with a phobia know, intellectually, that the fear is disproportionate. They know the spider is small, the lift will not trap them, the aeroplane is unlikely to crash. Knowing this changes nothing. The fear fires anyway, instantly, intensely and beyond the reach of reason.

That is because a phobia does not live in the rational mind. It lives deeper, in the part of the brain responsible for threat detection and survival responses. Once that part has learned to treat something as dangerous, often through a single frightening experience, or through gradual association, it reacts automatically, before conscious thought has a chance to intervene.

Telling yourself the fear is irrational may not be enough to change an automatic response. Hypnotherapy may help you practise calm and approach the trigger differently, in manageable steps that are agreed with you.

Changing the response at its source

How can hypnotherapy help with phobias?

In a calm, focused hypnotic state, the mind becomes more receptive and less defended. This creates an opportunity to revisit the associations and memories that underlie the phobic response, not to relive them in distress, but to process them differently and replace the automatic reaction with something calmer and more proportionate.

Depending on your phobia and what is driving it, our work together may help you:

  • Reduce or eliminate the automatic fear response to a specific trigger
  • Approach situations you have been avoiding for months or years
  • Experience the physical symptoms of phobic anxiety, the racing heart, nausea, frozen feeling, far less intensely or not at all
  • Feel calm and in control in situations that previously overwhelmed you
  • Build a more realistic, proportionate response to the thing you have been fearing
  • Reclaim the parts of your life, travel, social situations, medical care, that the phobia has been limiting

Many different phobias, one careful approach

Phobias that people commonly ask me about.

Animals and insects

Fear of spiders, dogs, birds, snakes, wasps and other creatures can restrict daily life far more than other people realise. Hypnotherapy may help you change the automatic alarm response.

Heights and enclosed spaces

Fear of heights or enclosed spaces can affect travel, work, housing choices and ordinary activities. We can work gently with the physical and emotional response.

Medical and dental situations

Fear of needles, blood, dental treatment or medical procedures can lead people to delay essential care. Hypnotherapy may help make necessary treatment feel more manageable.

Flying and driving

Fear of flying, driving, motorways or particular routes can be deeply limiting. We can explore the trigger and practise a calmer response.

Public speaking and performance

Fear of speaking in front of others can affect work, relationships and everyday opportunities. Hypnotherapy may help with the automatic freezing, shaking or mental blankness that comes with it.

Something else entirely

Phobias can attach to almost anything. If yours isn't listed, please get in touch. I genuinely love hearing about the unusual ones.

Calm, focused and paced with care

What happens during a session?

We begin by talking about the phobia, what triggers it and how it affects your life. You don't need to know where it began.

During hypnosis, we work gently with the associations beneath the fear response. You remain in control and won't be forced to confront anything that feels unmanageable.

Some people notice change quickly, while others need more time, especially when fear is connected with trauma or broader anxiety. I won't promise a set number of sessions before I understand your situation.

A genuine desire for change

Is hypnotherapy right for me?

Hypnotherapy for phobias may be suitable if you:

  • Have a specific fear that fires automatically and feels impossible to control
  • Know, rationally, that your fear is disproportionate but cannot change it by thinking differently
  • Are avoiding people, places, activities or situations because of the fear
  • Want to travel, seek medical care, or move through daily life without the phobia getting in the way
  • Have tried to manage the fear alone and found that willpower or logic has not been enough
  • Are ready to work with what is happening beneath the surface, in a calm and supported way
