Support, safety and informed choice

Your wellbeing matters

Hypnotherapy is one possible complementary approach. This page explains when another professional or urgent support may be the right next step.

Your wellbeing comes before booking a session.

The right support matters more than the route.

You do not need to work out everything alone before you ask for help. A conversation with a doctor, mental health professional or another appropriate service can be an important first step.

If hypnotherapy is not the right place to begin, or should sit alongside other care, I will say so honestly.

Complementary care

Hypnotherapy can sit alongside other support.

Hypnotherapy is not medical treatment, psychotherapy or crisis care. It does not replace assessment, diagnosis or treatment from a doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist or other qualified professional.

It may sometimes complement care you already receive. Please tell me about relevant treatment or support so that we can discuss whether hypnotherapy is appropriate and whether coordination with another professional would be helpful.

Do not stop or change prescribed medication because you are considering hypnotherapy. Speak to the professional who prescribed it, or to a pharmacist or doctor, if you have questions or concerns.

When to seek professional help

A doctor or mental health professional may be the right first step.

Please seek appropriate professional assessment if symptoms are new, worsening, unexplained or significantly affecting daily life. That includes changes in mood, thinking, sleep, eating, pain, physical health, relationships or your ability to function.

Professional advice is also important when you are concerned about a possible condition, have questions about medication, are receiving treatment already, or feel unsure about your safety or someone else's.

You do not need a diagnosis before contacting me. I may, however, suggest that another professional assesses or supports you before hypnotherapy begins, or alongside it.

Working alongside your doctor

Some conditions need a written referral from your GP.

As a hypnotherapist, I work within professional boundaries that protect you. For certain conditions, I may need a written referral from your GP or another treating professional before we can work together.

We can talk about this in an initial consultation. If a referral is needed, I will tell you plainly what is required and why, so that you can make the choice that is right for you.

What happens if you contact me?

I will listen to what is happening and explain what hypnotherapy can and cannot offer. You can ask me anything you like, and there is no obligation to book.

If another professional or service seems more appropriate, I will tell you. If hypnotherapy may have a complementary role, we can discuss how it might fit safely around the care and responsibilities already in place.

Support information last checked: 27 July 2026. Service details can change; follow the official links above for the latest information.
