Community volunteering
Secretary of the European Union of Women Mujeres en Igualdad Marina Alta.
In 2019, I unexpectedly found myself in a conference room at the Lady Elizabeth School. I was surrounded by an extraordinary group of women led by Margaret Hales, who was then President of the European Union of Women.
What began as simple curiosity started me on a path that changed how I see community, leadership and the importance of women supporting one another.
Volunteering is an important part of who I am. Serving my community gives me purpose and makes life richer. I try to do it with humility, not for recognition, but because I want to help in whatever way I can. If you have ever thought about volunteering, I highly recommend it. There are so many ways to make a difference in your own community.
These are the organisations I am actively involved with.
I am Secretary of the European Union of Women Marina Alta. We raise awareness of women's issues and equality through events and activities, including International Women's Day and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. I love connecting with women and organisations in our area who share these aims. I also get to meet the nicest people.
The European Union of Women was founded in 1953, after the Second World War. Its history is fascinating and I have learned so much from being part of it. Within living memory, women had far less access to education, financial independence, legal protection and public leadership. Much has changed, but the work isn't finished. Visibility matters because seeing women lead can change what girls believe is possible for their own lives.
Organisations, charities, networks and women's groups such as EUWMA create spaces where women from different countries and backgrounds can support one another, share knowledge and work together.
Volunteering with EUWMA has been an amazing experience. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
